The Birth of Melbourne
Farmers and pastoralists were the first important users of forested land. Clearing the taller forest trees and dense under-storey began in earnest in the mid-nineteenth century. Giant logs and sawn timbers were transported by barge, and bullock drays, then
shipped across Bass Strait where it was used in Melbourne’s buildings.
